Test report and technical data Nokia 5100
IT'S A SPACY TRICKY THING !!!
Plus of Nokia 5100: dust/splash proof, display, built in torch, size and weight, java, reception and voice quality, automatically saves sent texts so you can keep count of your free text allowance
Minus of Nokia 5100: keys need to be pressed quite hard (compared to other Nokias) -> slowed down my previously fast texting ability!, weak vibratory alert, awkward headset supplied as standard
I have the Nokia 5100 for a week now. I previously owned a Nokia 5020 and a 6310i, but I can honestly state that the Nokia 5100 is the best out of all those. The dust proof cover of the Nokia 5100 will hopefully prevent the copious amounts of dust that have accumulated behind the screen of every other phone I've owned (due to being carried in my pocket all the time).
Now I can as well use my Nokia 5100 in the rain without having to worry about water affecting it (a great advantage as I love going camping).
The size and weight of the Nokia 5100 is just right for me; small enough to be carried in my jeans pocket without looking like a fool, yet just the right size for my hand. The Nokia 5100 feels solid and it is easy to grip.
The color-screen of Nokia 5100 is really impressive, it offers many different colors and has a good resolution (128 x 128 Pixel). The built in torch is very useful and definitely not an unnecessary gimmick.
Thankfully Nokia 5100 uses two LED's which spend a reasonable amount of light, you never need to change them, thus the Nokia 5100 uses only little power.
The Nokia 5100 has all the features, and more, that its precursor offered, yet the Nokia 5100 is considerably cheaper (SIM free) than its precursors. I would strongly advice you to take a look at the terrific functions and the technical details of the Nokia 5100 in advance, if you should consider buying the Nokia 5100.
The Nokia 5100 is characterized by high speed data transfer (hscsd9 and the Nokia 5100 is also assisted by gprs (General Packet Radio Service). The wap-browser of the Nokia 5100 works via gprs as well as via csd.
The Nokia 5100 comes with these standard features:
- grps (general packet radio service)
- well-integrated UKW radio
- voice dial-function via integrated loudspeakers
- flashlight, calculator, clock, digital watch with screensaver, countdown, currency- and time-calculator
- individual, user-defined and time-steered profiles
- color-screen and background colors
- 11 predefined ringer tones (can not be deleted), more to download...
The Nokia 5100 stores up to 150 text- and 50 image-messages (45 kbyte) and connects extra long messages automatically.
The only feature, the Nokia 5100 lacks is a 'Wallet feature', however you can download it via java. This 'Wallet feature' allows you to store confidential information on your Nokia 5100.
The reception quality of the Nokia 5100 is very good, now I even get a signal in areas where my previous phones had to give up. The voice quality of the Nokia 5100 is also very clear and undistorted.
The only thing I truly have to criticize about the Nokia 5100 is, that my texting speed has been slown down due to the extra effort required to press keys. The vibratory alert of the Nokia 5100 is a bit too weak as well. One last thing: the supplied headset of the Nokia 5100 is pretty lousy; I prefer ear-plugs as they are more discreet.
Overall, a very, very good phone which I can highly recommend. You won't be disappointed!
