Test report and technical data Sagem WA 3050
The Sagem WA 3050: the first Smartphone with a cool, elegant style
Plus of the Sagem WA 3050: MP3 capable, reliable and wireless, good finishing, telephone function can be switched off
Minus of the Sagem WA 3050: no data-turbo, no GPRS, no Bluetooth, only 16 grey tones, no profiles
The combination of Palm and mobile phone that makes the Sagem WA 3050 a small mobile office is a relatively new market segment. What one notices first about the Sagem WA 3050 is that it's the first Smartphone on the market that actually looks good. The integrated phone-function still needs some improvement even here in the Sagem WA 3050. Of course the Sagem WA 3050 has some of the usual teething problems: complicated configuration of the online-functions (the manual won't help much), which is an indicator for the still not perfected technology of the Sagem WA 3050. But after a short, bumpy familiarization phase one will be able to manage data with the Sagem WA 3050 easily.
The Sagem WA 3050 gets a lot of credit with its smart appearance, its ease of use and the outstanding quality. For a Smartphone the Sagem WA 3050 is surprisingly easy to operate. But it's like this with the Sagem WA 3050: when it comes to phoning you can't expect as much from the Sagem WA 3050 as you would from a regular mobile phone. Unfortunately the Sagem WA 3050 doesn't have a color display, which of course is a step back to the Stone Age for spoiled users.
Data-functions of the Sagem WA 3050:
The Sagem WA 3050 is equipped with a serial and an infrared interface and an integrated modem. However this only enables a transfer rate of 9,6 kbits/s for WAPping, internet-surfing, mailing and faxing. The Sagem WA 3050 will be available without the data-turbo GPRS at first. However the Sagem WA 3050 will be upgradeable for a fee. The connection via cable and infrared interface on the other hand was up after just a few seconds and very stable with the Sagem WA 3050. Once that works you can play MP3s with the integrated MP3 player of the Sagem WA 3050. The Sagem WA 3050 can even record several voice-memos and also send them via email attachments.
The WinCE user interface of the PDA-mode allows the user to find the menus and functions of the Sagem WA 3050 quickly, but the navigation tends to take some time. The phone-function of the Sagem WA 3050 hasn't been integrated well on the other hand. The user of the Sagem WA 3050 can only access a few functions when in the phone-mode, e.g. the call lists and the integrated hands-free function of the Sagem WA 3050. Only four special keys at the upper half of the keypad of the Sagem WA 3050 allow a direct access to particular functions of the Sagem WA 3050, for everything else the user has to access the PDA-menu of the Sagem WA 3050.
I hope my info has helped you make a decision, for the purchase or against it: the Sagem WA 3050 won't take it personally.
